Missionary Bio:
Even though he was only five years old at the time, Fred can vividly remember the night he asked Jesus to be his personal Savior. He believes that he was born again at that time. At age 12 he committed his life to missionary service. Fred attended Baptist Bible College of Pennsylvania and received a BRE in missions and a Th.B. in Pastoral Studies.
Rachel was saved in her first semester at BBC and at that time felt led into full-time service. Rachel has a BRE degree from BBC. Both the Whitman's were specifically called to Italy while at the Baptist Mid-Missions Candidate seminar.
They have been on the field since 1973 serving as church planters. The church the Whitmans started in Perugia now has its own building – probably the first Baptist church in the history of the papal state of Italy to own their own property and building.
In 1979, a TV ministry was started, and there is now a TV program that airs twice daily. Since 1982 the Whitmans have been operating the first Christian FM station in central Italy , on the air 24 hours a day with an automated, computerized system, broadcasting Christian programming and classical music. Through the years many people have been saved and added to the church as a result of the TV and radio ministries.
The Whitmans have four adult children, all of whom are full-time missionaries serving, or preparing to serve, in Italy .
